Arbutus menziesii, also known as Pacific Madrona, salvaged from Eastern Vancouver Island clearcut before a housing development went in.
I like to embrace the natural features and elements of the wood into my carvings, and I immediately saw a humpback whale in this live-edge Arbutus slab. This is an extremely rare slab, due to it's unique shape and because Madrona species is protected in British Columbia.
Variety of power tools and traditional carvings tools were used to carve on this slab, Saman stain for shading, and tung oil finish.
